The Cloud of Unknowing Revisited: Centering Prayer and the Foundations of Non-Dual Conscousness Cynthia Bourgeault
The fourteenth-century spiritual classic, The Cloud of Unknowing, is well known to practitioners of Centering Prayer as the primary source of their practice. In this conference, Cynthia Bourgeault opened new ground with the Cloud by proposing that what its anonymous author is describing by the word “contemplation” is the transition to non-dual consciousness. Cynthia led us in an exploration of what this actually entails, how this new perspective helps to clear up some of those notoriously difficult passages in the Cloud, and why Centering Prayer is so essential to the process.
A modern-day mystic, Episcopal priest, writer, and internationally known retreat and conference leader, Cynthia passionately promotes the practice of Centering Prayer. She has worked closely with Thomas Keating, Bruno Barnhart, Richard Rohr, and other Christian contemplative masters to recover the Christian contemplative and wisdom path. She is the founding director and principal teacher at The Contemplative Society in Canada and the Aspen Wisdom School. She has written seven books – which have been popular in our bookstore – and numerous articles on the Christian spiritual life. She divides her time between solitude in her seaside hermitage in Maine and traveling globally to teach.
