John and I had been composing together for about five years when I received a phone call.

ELIZABETH: Hi. Can you compose an album for us?

BLAIR: Probably. What type of music are you looking for?

ELIZABETH: I'm an editor at an educational publishing company. We want an album of music that kids can listen to as they do their classwork. We don't want vocals, only instrumental. We also want a full cultural identity in the music, so kids are exposed to the musical ideas of different people in the world. Use this mission statement: A multicultural instrumental album for kids to listen to as they do their classroom work. What do you think? Will you do it?

BLAIR: Definitely!

That was how John and I composed and recorded our first album and formed JonathanBlair (John Bickham and Blair Ashby - As you can see, we worked long and hard on coming up with that name). John and I went on to make a lot of music for several artists, and we culminated with our best selling album Inner Room.
